Who is G.I. Gurdjieff?

G. I. Gurdjieff was a spiritual Master who lived during the first half of the 20th century. He was a sage who grew up in the Christian Church and traveled the world in his search to understand the question: “What is the sense and aim of life on earth and of human life in particular?”

In his travels he found a teaching known as the Fourth Way and brought it to Europe and America. The Fourth Way uses the forces of everyday family, business and professional life to “work on oneself in the midst of life.” The Fourth Way educates the mind, the heart and the body with the aim of living a more balanced life.

The mind studies ideas, the emotions are developed through special exercises and music and the body is developed through “movements” and postures. All centers are developed through self-study in the company of a group of people committed to this way of spiritual development. Mr.Gurdjieff taught sacred dances and movements and composed a body of sacred music. He also wrote three books, and over 150 books have been written about him.

Today, there are three major Gurdjieff Foundations – Paris, New York and London with affiliated groups from every part of the globe. The Red Mountain Study Group (The Gurdjieff Foundation of Alabama) is under the guidance of the New York Foundation.
