G.I. Gurdjieff was born in Alexandropol, near the frontiers of Russia and Turkey, circa 1866. Finding that neither science nor religion answered his questions about the meaning of human life, he became convinced that an ancient knowledge must exist and could be found on earth. After twenty years of searching through remote parts of Central Asia and the Near East, he returned to Russia in 1912. Later he settled near Paris and established the Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man. In 1942 he made the first of a series of visits to America.
He died in Paris in 1949.
Gurdjieff brought to western civilization a system of knowledge from the East that was hidden until that time. This system of timeless wisdom consists of an extensive body of literature, music and sacred dance that accommodates many levels of understanding. The basic premise is to experience genuine Conscience, through the harmonious development of
body, mind and feeling.
